Judith Stanway
Judith Stanway is a qualified solicitor and compliance consultant. Following qualification Judith spent over ten years in private practice as a litigation solicitor primarily dealing with personal injury claims.
Judith joined the SRA in 2003 as a Practice Standards Adviser and spent the following eight years conducting almost weekly visits to legal firms to provide advice and guidance on all aspects of compliance with the Solicitors’ Code of Conduct, The Solicitors’ Accounts Rules, Money Laundering Regulations, Investment Business provisions and other relevant legislation. Judith gave presentations to the profession on how to avoid non-compliance and achieve best practice in client care and complaints handling.
Judith also spent time on secondment in the Fraud and Confidential Intelligence Bureau and in the Assigned Risk Pool Team. She undertook visits and provided advice to many firms in the ARP in relation to the Solicitors Indemnity Insurance Rules and in seeking applications for waivers.
Given her regulatory and private practice background, Judith has a thorough understanding of the steps that firms need to take to reduce their exposure to risk of non-compliance in relation to the SRA’s outcomes-focused approach. She is able to provide practical advice on appropriate solutions as well as having first-hand knowledge of the ABS and Lexcel application process.
When not working, Judith enjoys spending time baking, walking the dog and socialising with family and friends.
